Filipino Summer Dessert : Halo-Halo

Filipinos love doing desserts, sweet foods and etc. that will fit in with current season in the Philippines. Halo- Halo is the best dessert not only for Filipinos but also for other tourists who visits the Philippines. It is one of the most popular, cheapest and yummiest dessert to cool down when it comes to summer season.

“Halo-Halo” is a tagalog word that means “mixed” in English. This dessert was named Halo-Halo because of its mixed ingredients. Halo-Halo is a combination of Shaved Ice drizzled with evaporated milk, sugar,sweetend fuits, jellies, leche flan, Ube halaya or Ube jelly and ube ice cream.

There are many different kinds or style of Halo-halo. The good thing about this dessert is you can make your own version of this. You can add some fruit flavor that you want, and you can make your own style!. It is also easy to make one, you will just need to combine all the Ingredients.

It can also be ideal to those who wants to do a part time bussiness in summer season. I still remember when I was a child, one of the most exciting moment for me is buying Halo-halo from my Auntie. She was selling Halo-Halo in front of her house. Every morning, I was always waiting for her to arrive from market why? because I really want to watch her cooking some of her Halo-halo’s ingredients and she was really good in cooking and preparing those. I was also helping her for her stall preparation and assisting her costumers and at the end? — I have free Halo-halo! It is a common scenario in Philippine provinces every summer. The Ingredients are easy to find. There are ready made ingredients in the wet markets here in the Philippines but if you can’t buy ready made, you can make your own flovours!

Here are the suggested flavours that you can put in your Halo-Halo :

1. Crushed ice :

–you can buy crushed ice in the market and also you can do it by your self using ice crushers.

2. Sugar:

–Sugar is easy to find, it’s everywhere 😁

3. Ube halaya / ube Jellies

–It is made from sweet potatoes. Only you can do is boil the sweet potatoes, if it’s already cooked, grate it,then mix sugar, water and ube( purple) food color in a pan then put the grated sweet potatoes. Mix it until it thickend.

4. Leche flan:

–You can buy ready made lecheflan in the market. And you can also make your own version of it.

5. Sweetend Banana and Sweet potatos

–slice the banana and chop the sweet potatoes into cubes. Mix the water, sugar, food color( orange) into the pan until it boil and mix the sliced banana and chopped sweet potatoes. cook them separately.

6. Sago / black Pearl:

–same procedure with sweetend banana and sweet potatoes but use ube ( purple) food color.

7. Gulaman(Jellies)

–There are ready made jellies in the market but you can also make your own version.

8. Kaong and Nata De Coco

–you can buy these on super markets

9. Sweetend buko ( coconut )

–Same procedure with Sweetend banana and sweet potatoes.

10. Beans

-You can buy it on the market.

11. Ube Ice Cream

– You can buy it in super marketsand in every ice scream stall.

12. Evaporated Milk

— You can buy this on the market. This ingredient is to be put always at the end after you put all the ingredients together.

Those are some ingredients that you can put in your Halo-halo. but there are many fruits and flavors that you can use in this. It’s up to your taste and creativity.

Preparation:

Get a water glass (or any kind of container tha you want, you can put it also in fresh coconut shell) put the exact amount of sugar ( based on the level of sweetness that you want), layer all the flovours one by one, except the ube ice cream and leche flan. put the the crushed ice. press it, drizzle enough amount of evaporated milk then put the leche flan and Ube ice cream as toppings.
